First Day of School

Hello all – this is the first posting of a new blog on education.  This is not my first foray into the blogosphere, though I have been on a year-long hiatus.  You can find some of my old entries, here.  Like the previous blog, this one aims to focus on issues of access to education, school reform and the improvement of education afforded in public schools.  You can learn more about the mission and goals of the blog, as well as the background of its author, on the About page.

Just like on the first day of school, TeacherJay is excited to get off to a good start after months of planning, to introduce himself to his new audience, and begin discussing the face of education.  This blog is also part of a larger site – TeacherJay.net – in which you will find oodles of information and resources.  The Education section is still a work in progress, and other sections – Learning, Travel, Green Living, Software and Baha’i – will all, hopefully, be opening in the coming months.

2009 will likely be an interesting year in education.  With a new president who promises change not only to the nation, but also in public education, and his hand-picked Secretary of Education both taking office later this month, we will all be keeping a close eye on them.  It will be interesting to see if the same efforts towards charter schools, and increased accountability will be seen with this new administration.  With the expected decline in funding for the war in Iraq, we will see an increase to funding – especially when it comes to No Child Left Behind-mandated programs – or will that money need to go towards bailing out more banks and industries in order to repair the economy?  Perhaps only time will tell, but TeacherJay will be watching.
