Landmark Supreme Court Cases

Supreme Court Building While browsing for reference materials to support essays I am writing, I stumbled upon an excellent site that is a project of The Street Law & The Supreme Court Historical Society, Landmark Supreme Court Cases is designed to help teachers review the issues and decisions made in 17 of the most influential cases in the United States.  Cases discussed include: Roe v. Wade; Plessy v. Ferguson; and Brown v. Board of Education.  Resources include not just the full-text of the opinions, but also excerpts and summaries at three different reading levels.

For teachers, there are activities for students to explore what happened in the case and its ramifications as well as lesson planning guides.  This makes the site a great resource for teachers to guide students through some of the most pivotal cases in our country’s history.  As well, it is a great place for anyone to use as a starting point when researching the law.  There are links to FindLaw, OYEZ, and the official U.S. Supreme Court site for other additional information and explanation of key legal concepts, such as Federalism, Due Process and Checks & Balances.

Other Good Law Sites

  • FindLawwww.findlaw.com – this site is good for the lay person who just wants to know what the law says about a variety of topics; lots of resources, such as links and contact information for different government offices
  • OYEZwww.oyez.org – excellent site with overviews of Supreme Court cases including dockets, written decisions, and even audio recordings of the arguments; that can be browsed by topic
  • United States Supreme Court (official site) – www.supremecourtus.gov
